flurries blowing around from the wind. it is coming down in parts of new york state and across the new england states. new york's governor andrew cuomo, has opened up an emergency operations center and he also warned power companies to really be on their toes especially following all the criticism that happened for their slow response from superstorm sandy and getting power turned back on for those residents who were in the dark and the cold for a couple of weeks. our plans changed a little bit last night. we decided to spend the night in clarks summit because the road conditions deteriorated and we didn't want to go farther north. the borough president told me their snow totals were down last year and they were able to stockpile some of the salt from the roadways last year and that's what they're using for this storm. council president says they're happy this first snowstorm of the season hasn't been a major blizzard for them. >> we're on a good track this year and, you know, the weather, you take what you get. and, we're going to make lemonade out of it i guess. >> reporter: and for

new york today. boy, they don't need that. bonnie schneider with a look at the forecast. good morning. >> good morning. the storm we've been talking about is working its way to extreme northeastern new england. it is hitting canada hard. quebec is getting more snow. i mentioned yesterday that cold air would come in behind the system. it sure has. scranton at 26. below freezing in new york city at 31. just to let you know, it's not over yet. a brand new storm system set up these winter weather advisories for pennsylvania and into new york, washington, d.c., and the mountains of virginia. you can see also ohio slammed again after so much snow from the first system. so the way it's going to play out, saturday into sunday, this system is likely going to bring heavier snow to areas of northern pennsylvania in terms of snowfall totals. it's not going to be as big of a snowmaker or a blizzard maker from what we saw last time, but it will produce strong snowfall through central connecticut and rhode island. new england, you know winters can be long. winter is not officially -- is officially h

the northeast will look a lot like that, especially interior sections, pennsylvania, upstate new york and even portions of new england. later on tonight we'll quickly see the conditions deteriorating across the northeast. this storm system is very widespread. it is a large storm and areas across the south that aren't really dealing with any precipitation across places in alabama we're still dealing with strong winds from this storm. gusts easily over 40 miles per hour. we have wind advisories across the florida panhandle, alabama, georgia, portions of the carolinas and kentucky and state of tennessee. we're seeing a lot of widespread winds even though the storm system is not producing precipitation in your area. another big concern for the storm we're looking at a risk for more severe weather. we saw 30 reports of tornados yesterday. very unusual to see that during christmas day or even this late in the year. now we have another tornado watch. we're still seeing risk of tornados across eastern portions of state of north carolina and across portions of the state of south carolina. this tornado

, in much of upstate new york, they've canceled preemptively the flights out of there for tomorrow and here's why. here is the big snow picture. kind of the snow sweet spot from cleveland through i-90 and in toward buffalo, rochester, syracuse, so it is all lifting to the north. the same storm that we have seen bring feet of snow elsewhere. so going a little bit closer, you can see very dark white is heavy snow, maybe 1, 2 inches an hour. and right along the lakefront, cleveland, erie, buffalo and points down. so i-86, i-90, i-80, i-80 tonight we'll watch the snow lift farther north and then driving perilous conditions tomorrow. really in upstate new york and western new york. and part of the problem is is that we thought thehave these i strong winds. right now indy gusting to 33 miles an hour. as far south as nashville, cleveland, as well, 32-mile-per-hour wind gusts. and that axis of winds is pushing into the northeast for upstate no, late tonight and really balance of tomorrow. in terms of the blizzard, there's the blizzard warning now. it's down to just a few counties. in north central

an hour, it's the winds. whether we see winds in washington or new york already slowing down travel tonight, they won't see the snow accumulation. it's the winds with this system that's a big deal. indy gusts to almost 40 miles per hour. roanoke, virginia to dchicago. we're talking a big geography in terms of the impacts of it. here's where the blizzard warnings are in. that's for 6 to 12 inches of snow coupled with winds at 40, 50 miles per hour making it difficult to see and visibility is down near zero. that's kind of the blizzard warning scenario. there's the blizzard warning. you can see that in areas of indiana and illinois and moving into ohio. these in the pink are winter weather warnings, so we'll see that. here's the snow. 12 inches at the very least, and in upstate new york, suzanne, we will see at least 12 inches of snow. so the timing in and around western new york, we see the snow tonight to tomorrow. i know you travel a lot, and it's those big cities in and around new york and new jersey and washington, big-time travel delays at the airports. already canceling hundred

schumer telling the "new york times," i didn't realize how much i didn't want to be here until i got here. and rand paul saying he would rather be playing soccer with his kids and telling the "times" quote, this is no way to run things. and wall street agrees, the dow industrial is losing more than 150 points, ending a fifth straight day on the down side. joining us now with the very latest, chief white house correspondent jessica yellin. jessica, was any progress really made today? was there any movement at all besides this being dropped in the senate's lap? >> well, by washington's standards, that is progress. and i know it's hard to believe, but the fact that all these leaders left this meeting in agreement about the next step is a hopeful sign. the good news here is that this could have been much worse. they could have come out of the meeting saying it's impossible to reach an agreement. we cannot even begin negotiations. there will be no deal. that did not happen. so the fact that they have a game plan for the weekend and for the next step, it's better than a lot of people hoped for.
